Chapter 16

The next day dawned clear and bright, the mist from Carraig long behind us. I stood at the bow of the Windracer, savoring the breeze on my face. Zehara’s footsteps approached, light and confident.

I turned to see her approach. Lithe and tall, with measured footsteps, her red hair and white-tipped fox ears dancing in the wind. She had borrowed a light cotton shirt and a pair of short breeches from Laila, and they hugged her slender form tightly.

She was a sight, alright…

“Good morning, Jonathan,” she said. “Last night was... enjoyable.” Her eyes twinkled as she looked out at the endless blue sky.

I grinned broadly, remembering the details vividly. “Yes, it was.” I watched her for a moment. “You don’t think it was… too fast?”

Zehara laughed lightly. “Foxkin are very open about such things, Jonathan. We see it as a natural part of life. There’s no need to tread carefully. It is silly to hide one’s feelings. I know what you mean — you are The Morrigan’s champion, and you are a good and honorable man. I can tell simply by how loving your wives are.”

I smiled, feeling relieved. “Well, I’m glad. Moving so fast. It was a... new experience for me.”

“I’m glad too,” she said, leaning on the railing beside me. “You and your companions are very close. It’s a good thing. Such bonds are important, especially for what lies ahead.”

I nodded, grateful for her perspective. “We do share a strong bond. It’s what keeps us going.”

Zehara placed a hand on my arm. Her touch was warm. “You have a good heart, Jonathan. The Morrigan chose well.” She smiled, then turned to look out at the horizon. “Let’s see what the day brings.”

Later, as the sun climbed higher, I found Mackenzie leaning against the railing. Her red hair caught the light. She looked thoughtful, gazing out at the endless sky. I approached her, my footsteps soft on the wooden deck.

“Morning, Mackenzie,” I said, coming to stand beside her. “How are you feeling today?”

She turned to me, a smile forming on her lips. “Morning, Jonathan. I’m feeling good, better than I have in days.”

“I’m glad to hear that,” I said, leaning on the railing. “About last night... It was quite something.”

Mackenzie chuckled softly. “It was, wasn’t it? A bit impulsive, maybe, but I enjoyed it.” Her eyes met mine. There was an openness there that I appreciated. “I think it brought us all closer.”

I nodded in agreement. “Yes, it did. I was a little worried at first — about how you’d feel. I’m glad you enjoyed it.”

She laughed warmly, and I admired her pretty face as the wind whipped her ginger hair about her. “I don’t think I gave the impression of not having fun.”

I laughed along with her. “That’s true,” I said. “But you know… Things are different on Earth.”

She placed her hand over mine and squeezed it. “They are. And we’re here now.” Her blazing green eyes met mine. “I don’t think I will be going back, Jonathan. Not if I have a say in it.
